Brisbane - Wedding 4 - Real-life Story

from russia with love - brisbane wedding of michael and diana

My husband and I were meant to be. Of all the computers in all the world ours connected, we met through the internet and as we had a lot of common interests we continued talking every day.

At that time nobody would have thought that one day we would get married.

After approximately one and a half years of talking only on the internet we decided that we would like to meet and Michael came to visit me in Novosibirsk, Russia. We did not know each other except by talking for the last year and a half on the internet. He could not speak the Russian language, and I was only learning to speak English. He visited me in Russia twice. The first time was a very cold winter with temperatures down to -30 degrees. It was a new experience for him and we spent 3 months together. The second time was in the summer and we enjoyed six weeks of warm weather at my home town in Novosibirsk. Michael again met my family and we also travelled to a resort on the Black Sea.

We then arranged to meet each other again in Thailand. It was so beautiful, we had a wonderful time together and we realised that we wanted to be together forever. We decided to get married.

I wanted to buy my wedding dress in Russia and looked for two months to find my special dress. I went to approximately 30 shops in Novosibirsk where I lived and also a few shops in Moscow. There was a big choice but I wanted something different, as when I was a little girl I dreamt about having a special wedding dress. I had almost decided on a particular dress, but I thought I would look once more in the very first shop that I had visited, and when I saw this wedding dress I bought it straight away. It was a dress that I Had dreamt about. It was designed about the period when we had a King and Queen in Russia. I thought it was magnificent, with hard corset and flowers made carefully from the same fabric with tiny pearl droplets inside every flower. Also it had a neckband and small handbag crafted in the same way with peach coloured flowers and pearl droplets.

I had to pack my wedding dress very carefully and carry it with me on the long flight from Russia to Australia. Here I learnt quickly the Australian traditions to celebrate weddings. We had three bridesmaids and three groomsmen and a beautiful flower girl. As my dress was a peach colour and not the usual white dress, I chose for my bridesmaids, elegantly styled, ivory coloured satin dresses with a very small train.

The florist, Gwen Hands of Carbrook, understood my idea and she made a beautiful bouquet for me with white and Gerdo champagne coloured roses, and peach and ivory coloured rose bouquets for my bridesmaids and flower girl. The church pews were decorated with bouquets of ivory coloured roses. We used the same colour scheme to decorate the tables at the reception with white chair covers and white chair sashes. We also had King and Queen chairs at the reception.

My sister Nadya, made the long journey from Russia to be at our wedding. She was my chief bridesmaid. Guests also travelled from as far south as Melbourne and Sydney, and as far north as Cairns and Mackay.

Our wedding day was very beautiful. We had a nice ceremony at the Albert Street Uniting Church, and after we had rose petals thrown in the air and we released three white doves as symbol of love, peace and hope. We had photo shoots at Roma Street Parklands, Stamford Plaza Hotel, Sandgate Pier and at Redcliffe where we had our reception, we also had sunset photos taken with a background of boats in the harbour. Our Photographer, Shaun Murray of Wynnum, and Videographer Joe Nucifora of Telecam Digital Media, Petrie Terrace, worked very hard and did really good work and realised our dreams to have beautiful photos and video for our memories.

We made our entrance to the reception to the music of a harpist and violinist, and they continued to play dinner music and also some Russian songs during the dinner. After dinner, the night continued with a band ‘Ta Balikaria' which included a bouzouki and violin, with percussion backing music. Our bridal waltz was to a song that is special to us, ‘From This Moment On', by Shania Twain.

We had a French wedding cake made for us by a French chef and his wife, who are close friends of ours. We cut our wedding cake with fireworks in the background, which surprised our guests.

Towards the end of our wedding our Photographer, Shaun Murray, presented a magnificent slideshow using photos of both of us growing up and wedding photos, commencing with us all getting ready on the day, the ceremony and the reception this was a wonderful way to end a truly magical day.
